Perhaps FOE’s relaxed policies towards membership are an effort to retain younger membership such as my millennial self. Another foreboding revelation I’ve discovered is the rapidly approaching closure of the baby boomer generation. Coincidently, most of the Eagles members I’ve encountered are baby boomers. Retirements brought a price of losing valuable experience and insight among businesses of boomers previously (Delong, 2004). I believe the same concept holds true to the Eagles as they are threatened to lose the backbone of their membership. To me, the Fraternity serves as a throwback of prior generations of strong Unions and dedicated workers. As with Delongs (2004) discovery, FOE depends on retention strategy to retain its boomer†¦show more content†¦I initially found it awkward that people would just go somewhere to just socialize. Nevertheless, once I suspended my judgements to partake in this activity of replacing face book technology with face t ime interaction, I found the satisfaction of such activities. With Facebook, one must actively prompt responses to feel secure among friends by getting â€Å"likes;† at the club however, one feels secure just being surrounded by friends. Adaptation After transitioning through Bennett’s 6 phases of ethno-relativity, I’ve recently transitioned to its integration phase after adaptation by becoming a member myself (Milton Bennett, 1993). I enjoy the benefits of volunteering for an organization of a greater cause while simultaneously immersing within the subculture that serves alongside me. I’ve discovered that direct service doesn’t always have to be carried out in some grand elaborate fashion, but a consistent willingness to lend a helping hand or an ear. Martin and Nakayama (2012) states ‘one important area where intercultural communication can be productively applied is community engagement.† I’m happy to discover the Eagles provide a sort of one stop shop for all aspects of community engagement via donations, volunteering for laborious tasks and simply providing good company. As a newly minted FOE member with my own membership card, I enjoy the same privileges my uncle now.
